My students are first-grade English language Learners and all come from low-income housing. Many of my students have yet to learn in a standard classroom setting, thus they have not had the opportunity to practice basic skills like reading, speaking, writing, and even holding a pencil. All students were given iPads last year, but many of my students experienced language and technology barriers preventing them from learning basic kindergarten skills. I am preparing materials for the upcoming school year to address the skills that could not be addressed in the virtual world. The pricier items in my project are all items that will help students practice their handwriting skills, and read independently all while using their own materials. Our school is going back completely in person, and with the new COVID variants, I would love individual supplies for my students to decrease the likelihood of spreading the virus. I also want to give my students the opportunity to bring reading materials home every night to practice reading books at their level. During my previous two years teaching at my school, I found the majority of my students do not have books in their homes. Giving students the opportunity to read at home, will hopefully encourage independent reading as well as a love for books. The other items in my project will help me stay organized. The upcoming school year will begin my third year of teaching. I am working to collect more supplies to stay organized and ultimately support my students reading and writing growth. Thank you!
