My students will use this carpet for a morning meeting, where they will work on social emotional learning through games and sharing. The wobble seats will help students with special needs to self-regulate throughout the school day; research informs us that some students fidget more when a task requires them to process and store information. This gives them a great way to get out those wiggles while still attending to their learning. They will use both the wobble seats and carpet as a space for partner and group work for serious academic play and to discuss those big ideas that are so important. My little world-changers, who attend our Title I school, in rural Appalachia, deserve to be comfortable in their own classroom. With more comfortable places to move in the classroom, students can have more options for self-regulation and more places to work with partners and small groups. Having the power to choose not only benefits my students by allowing them to practice making and reflecting on their choices, having the power to choose also creates intrinsic motivation. Having these spaces in my classroom will add choice, options for self-regulation, and comfortable places for partner and group collaboration.
