Success Through Digital Literacy
Funded Feb 9, 2023What a wonderful gift your donation to this project turned out to be. The calm strips were received with great enthusiasm. Students with stress, anxiety and/or sensory challenges, use them on their binders or books or laptops whenever they need a soothing moment. They come in a variety of styles and textures, so students were excited to choose the one that suited them most.
The digital literacy programs I was able to purchase (BrainPOP, BrainPOP ELL and NearPod) were instrumental in delivering equitable, accessible, effective lessons in literacy to a variety of diverse learners. Students acquiring the English language are able to independently access multi-modal lessons each day in a dynamic way. A classroom with diverse needs requires accessible lessons for all learners. Providing instruction and practice through the use of technology is a powerful tool in a special educator's arsenal! It allows me to meet multiple needs at the same time.
Thank you so much for helping my classroom to meet the many needs of my students through digital literacy programs.”

Funded Mar 4, 2023Thank you so much for your generous donation to our classroom. Having these materials was a game changer for my students.
Building my library with books written by diverse authors has allowed students of diverse backgrounds to choose from a wide variety of interesting books with characters that remind them of themselves. These books are relatable and create a bridge to literacy. Students are able to curl up with a good book after completing their oral literacy practice. Having a range of books for them to read is crucial. Engaging books like "When You Trap a Tiger," and "Island of the Blue Dolphins," written by diverse authors, coupled with reading & writing games and supplemental material has bolstered literacy and a love of reading in our classroom.
Supplemental reading and writing support is critical to developing literacy for students who are already behind several grade levels. These writing materials allowed me to work in small groups while some students worked independently to develop their skills. They are engaging and well-crafted to provide the support students need to work independently as they journey to become better writers and readers.
Thank you for your support. It is invaluable, and made a big difference in creating a welcoming learning environment where students felt like they belonged.”

Funded Oct 21, 2021Thank you so much for your donation to my classroom. It has enriched the learning environment in ways I cannot quantify. I can teach skills all day long, however, if the reading material does not interest my students, if they do not relate, if they are not engaged with it personally, then the battle is lost. Your donation awakened interest in students who often feel cut off from the world of literature. Students in my classroom this year learned to identify themes and author/character points of view. They learned to compare and contrast character motivation and behavior, identify sequence of events, and analyze the structure of a text. They learned to make inferences, and how to break down a text together and summarize. My favorite unit was when the students read the "New Kid," a graphic novel about an African American middle schooler facing prejudice at a new racially homogenous school. The students couldn't wait to keep reading each day.
In my classroom, reading is fun. Reading is safe. Reading is an adventure. Students loved having independent reading time in the giant bean bags your donation afforded them. Students chose from the many novels your donation purchased, and they were always engaged, which is rare for a silent reading time!
I think one of the things that delighted me the most was watching students on the low end of the reading spectrum, come alive and gain confidence and a real desire to read. That is half the battle, and you made it happen.”
