I am planning an extra special unit my students are going to LOVE! My 2nd and 3rd graders will be learning all about puppetry in the spring. Shadow Puppetry is a unique form of storytelling, and provides lots of opportunity to integrate curricular areas throughout the design and performance process! Each class of 3rd graders will go through the design process and build small puppet theatres for classroom use. This will include each individual student sketching ideas, and the class working together to choose 1 idea and then build the shadow puppet screen out of cardboard and parchment paper. Students will work through problem solving skills as they test materials with light to get a clear picture. Students in 2nd grade classes will be designing and building their own shadow puppets using black cardstock, sticks, tape, fasteners, and cellophane. They will also be problem solving throughout the design process! Then, in small groups, students will develop a short story and perform their shadow plays using the puppet theatres built by 3rd graders! And the great news is this project will continue on beyond this unit, beyond just these classes, and beyond this school year. We will be able to use the desk lamps and some of the other items for many future projects!
