Rates of change are a cornerstone of middle school mathematics. Given a base rate, students can setup proportions to further extrapolate data over greater magnitudes, such as distance over time. In the future, rates of change are applied to non-linear equations such as parabolas and circles. These fundamental concepts students learn in middle school become critical as student climb the ranks into Calculus and discover derivatives. Film and television are produced at 24 frames per second. Subtracting frames makes it feel choppy and disjointed, while adding frames counterintuitively produces "slow motion". Contrast this to velocity, where more meters per second means faster movement.
