  • Stream to Success: Tutoring for Multilingual Learners

    Funded Oct 19, 2024

Thank you so much for your support and kindness to our EL students at Waiphu High School. Because of you, our students could use the headphones you provided to practice their speaking in English. They gained the confidence to talk over the computers and record their voices.

Besides working on speaking with the headphones, our students could recharge themselves with the snacks you donated during our after-school EL tutoring session. Students were grateful to come into the tutoring session to work on their assignments and had snacks to help them stay focused. Because of what you have done, our students were able to achieve their academic goals to the best of their ability.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ruan

  • SEL Inclusive Community Afterschool Handcrafting

    Funded Feb 17, 2024

Thank you so much for your support and kindness to our EL students at Waiphu High School. Because of you, our students were able to join together to participate in our handcrafting workshops and tutoring sessions after school. In the workshop and tutoring sessions, students built relationships with each other, learned about other cultures, and worked on their academic work.

Besides working on handicrafts, students also felt social-emotional support while they were learning new knowledge. When they were stressed, they could pick up a handcrafting mosaic coaster kit to relieve stress and prepare for their work. Without you, our students won't have handcrafting kits to work on when they need to relieve stress and depression.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ruan

  • Multicultural Book Round 2

    Funded Mar 6, 2023

For years, EL students struggled to express their identities and cultures in our community for various reasons. Today, because of your support, my EL students could accomplish their bilingual book projects and share their cultures with students in Hawaii. The books you donated to our students allow them to read stories from different cultures and brainstorm their own stories. Moreover, they were able to create wonderful art pieces and express their identities to their audiences.

Besides the bilingual book project, students also fell in love with reading. They loved reading stories from their cultures and felt they were connected to home. Every day, they came into my classroom, they always looked for new books to read and borrow them home to continue their reading. Because of your donation, my students started to become readers who enjoy readings!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ruan

  • WHS Newcomers Handcraft Workshop

    Funded Oct 30, 2022

Thank you so much for your generous donation. Because of you, our students at Waipahu High School were able to use the candle kits, necklace kits, beads, and other handcraft materials to create different handcrafts that represent their own cultures. Our after-school handcraft workshop was a big success, and students starts to bring their friends to the workshop to create their handcrafts and make new friends and connections.

When the students first saw the new resources for handcrafting, they were so excited and appreciated. They couldn't wait to use the new resources so they always asked when they could use the different handcraft kits to create different handcrafts.

Because of your generous donation, we will continue to have our afterschool handcraft workshops for our students. We will also encourage our students to bring into their own cultural handcrafting ideas to share with other students at Waipahu High school.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ruan

  • My Multilingual Book

    Funded Aug 6, 2021

Thank you for your kind supports to my EL students.

For years, EL students struggled to express their identities and cultures in our community for various reasons. Today, because of your support, my EL students could accomplish their bilingual book projects and share their cultures with students in Hawaii. In addition, they were able to use all the educational supplies donated by you to write bilingual stories that are impactful and meaningful. Our whole school is excited to read about their stories and learn about their cultures, and we are excited to share the bilingual stories with other students in Hawaii.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Ruan

In this school year, all of my EL students will create a multilingual story book that will benefit future EL students and bring multilingualism to our school community. To do so, students will need to write their stories in Google Doc and create graphics on their Chromebook. However, many of the ELL students' technology skills are still low and have a hard time to use the tracing pads on their Chromebooks. Many times, because of misuse of the tracing pads, students accidentally delete their work and get frustrated. These wireless mouses will help them to work on their projects easily and less frustrated. Moreover, it can also help to draw their photographs easier and able to express their ideas more through digital graphic design. The gift cards from TpT will give a huge support on students' academic learning. In order for students to learn how to write a story, there is a need to provide scaffold materials to help all EL students understand the structure of narrative writing. The gift cards will allow me to look for different academic materials and use them for my students. This will enhance my students' learning on narrative writing.
