  • Building Community Through Games, Snacks, and Water

    Funded Apr 6, 2023

Thank you so so much for helping bring some joy and community to our classroom. The students are going to love the games and having some emergency water bottles in the classroom. And I'm excited for our math movie day when I can share these snacks :) You contribution means so much to us!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hwang

  • Calm Corner in Math Class

    Funded Aug 6, 2021

The Calm Corner I was able to create has been a key feature of our classroom! Students love being able to relax and lounge with each other on the bean bag chair, with the coloring books, and the fancy watercolor brush pen set! We have also been steadily using the daily supplies such as tissues, markers, pencils, erasers, tape, calculators, dice, games, etc.

My students were amazed I was able to afford so much stuff for them! They wondered where I got the money, and I told them I fundraised it and many people helped pitch in so they could have these nice things!

My next steps for my students on a current classroom lesson is to find more creative ways to learn math. I have been building my own curriculum this year, and I'm interested in finding more projects. This year we did a scale drawing project in chalk, made math escape rooms, and did a shopping project to practice calculating discounts. I hope to be on DonorsChoose again soon, with a hands-on activity in mind!

Thank you so much for helping me start off my first year of teaching with resources to create a safe and well-resourced learning environment for my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hwang

This classroom project was brought to life by Hawai'i State Department of Education.
Students will be reviewing basic arithmetic with the games I selected. They will get visual and tactile tools to help them learn fraction equivalence and negative integers. I will provide many, if not most, low-income students with school supplies. They will have the chance to go to the Calm Corner if they are dealing with difficult emotions. In the calm corner, they can color in the coloring books, stretch, or do breathing exercises. I chose coloring books and materials that relate to Hawaiian and Marshallese identities since those are a few of the demographics our students represent.
