Studies show that building a community of learners helps students succeed both academically and emotionally. After a year and a half of distance learning due to the Covid-19 pandemic, students have become more isolated from each other than ever before. To help facilitate the transition from learning at home to learning in the classroom, experts suggest making the classroom resemble students' homes and focusing heavily on community building activities to help students reestablish friendships and social activities. My desire is to create a classroom where students feel safe and comfortable. I would like to create a place where students want to be before and after school. The gaming system would give students a reason to come together and build those bonds of friendship that directly correlate to academic achievement. Only cooperative, multiplayer games would be allowed (thus the FIFA soccer game and extra controller). I arrive early and stay late so students whom might otherwise go home and be alone would have the opportunity to interact with peers. The refrigerator would hold cold bottles of water and fruit for students while the microwave would be available for student use (Ramen, Popcorn, hot water for tea, etc.). The goal would be to bring some of the amenities and comforts of home that students have grown accustom to since the start of the pandemic. The objective of my project is make our classroom environment on that is familiar, and that facilitates the building of a community, despite COVID-19.
