Across all of my classes, I am guaranteed approximately $3 per student per year. Ceramics is my most expensive course to teach because we have such a limited budget and the equipment, glazes, and tools are costly. If you work with clay, you know how expensive it can get. While ceramics is expensive, I recognize it is one of the art forms that bring my students the most joy, connectivity, and relaxation. Students love making pottery that they can gift to loved ones or keep forever for themselves. This year, students are working on their own large mugs. They will eventually be making plates, bowls, and other functional items. The tactile experience of working with clay is very therapeutic and helps students reconnect with their bodies. While clay is relatively inexpensive, glazes and a slab roller are great resources that are too expensive for me to purchase with my limited art budget. The slab roller not only helps with efficiency with so many students in the classroom (30 students per period) but also allow students to have more clean work that they are proud of. Glazes allow students to personalize and illustrate their ceramics and explore the relationship between 3D and 2D art and design.
