These books will be easily available for students to read in the classroom. We have independent reading every day, which means students will be able to read a variety of different books. In order to keep them interested and enjoying reading, I want to provide students with a wide selection of books, ranging from picture books, to chapter books, poetry books, books with characters that look like them and characters that don't look like them. Students will get to experience a range of books, leading to them finding a passion and love for reading. The books I've chosen are representative of my student's interests and are at varied reading levels. Having a diverse set of books helps students foster a love for reading and learning. Last year, I had students who were hesitant to read independently because they weren't interested in the book. When they were introduced to a book that was directly related to them, they finished the book within the week and was eager to talk about it! Last year during our poetry unit, we used poetry books to explore different poems. These books will offer more choices for students during poetry units. We will also be working with younger classrooms, where the 5th graders read to younger students, working on reading skills and leadership skills. These books also are used for social emotional learning and have a variety of themes and lessons related to personal growth, perseverance, leadership, family, courage, anger, identity and more.
