Budding Engineers
Funded May 26, 2022The STEM materials that we were able to purchase for the GES students were very well received by our budding engineers. Students are always so excited to work with new building materials, and the K'Nex sets did not disappoint. The 2nd and 3rd grade classes were eager to learn how to build a skateboard and rider. We took their designs and connected them to some sensors to actually make them move!
There are so many builds we are looking forward to trying and using our some of our other resources along with these amazing building sets.
Thank you for your support with STEM education.”

Funded Apr 19, 2022As a part of our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) program at Galax Elementary School, we strive to reach the whole child by including literature based lessons. Having a collection of classroom books for STEM has provided many opportunities for each grade-level to integrate STEM learning with literature.
Students in rural schools often lack real-life experiences and an effective way to allow these students to make connections is through stories. Students are able to visualize many storybook characters and feel as if they are sharing the character's learning experience. Books allow children to use their creativity and imagination as they experience life through various stories.
Our first grade students read one of the books, Too Tall Houses, where a rabbit and an owl find themselves competing to build the tallest house. The students were eager to build with building blocks and magna-tiles to build examples of each animal's house. They spent a few minutes building independently and then were challenged to collabotae and join the materials to buld one structure for both animals. The students used the problem and solution strategy from the storybook to find that working together is better.
Experiences such as this are invaluable to building 21st Centrury learners. Your support for the classroom library will make a lasting impact and we cannot thank you enough.”

Start STEMming
Funded Aug 12, 2021The primary students at Galax Elementary School would like to express our gratitude for your generous donation to our STEM program. Your support for our project provided us with amazing STEM building materials that have allowed us to investigate some cause and effect relationships through science and engineering.
First grade classes, consisting of about 90 total students, have enhanced their problem solving skills by creating different ramps to test speed and momentum with the materials provided through the Donors Choose funding.
Second grade classes, consisting is about 100 students, investigated gravity, force. and motion as they created chain reactions and problem solved ways to get their marbles to generate enough motion to hit their target.
The enthusiasm and excitement in learning is undeniable when students have materials to enhance their 21sr-century skills. The students and GES and I thank you again for your generosity.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Stuart
