One of main goals as a first year teacher is to encourage a love of reading for pleasure in my English classroom. After these 8th graders leave middle school, I want them to take the hobby of reading with them into high school beyond. As a first year teacher, I do not have many grade level appropriate books yet to provide my students. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more frequently, and writing skills also increase drastically the more students read. With these books, my students will be able to access a variety of high interest books at their fingertips which they can use for independent reading in class and even take home with them. I will display them in my classroom and feature them weekly to my students to encourage them to check out new books to read. If students are given the freedom to choose the books they read, it becomes more enjoyable and their motivation increases. In addition, I have chosen to purchase modern YA texts that focus on diversity and inclusion so that my students can relate to the literature offered to them. Some titles I am most excited about include All American Boys, The Poet X, and The House on Mango Street, all which feature diverse main characters around the same age as my own students, as well as being written by diverse authors. I would love for my students to relate to and feel seen by the books they read, as well as open their eyes to other experiences and cultures.
