I challenge the students in my class to read 40 books throughout the school year. I allow them to choose their own books, but encourage them to try several different genres. When students read a wide variety of books they often discover a love for subjects and genres they never would have picked before. A student who only reads Wimpy Kid graphic novels may find a new love for myths and legends after reading Perseus: The Hunt for Medusa's Head. Offering students relevant non-fiction magazine articles keeps them informed on world issues and allows them to practice important literary skills in a fun and interesting way.
