My classroom is filled with many different nationalities and languages. While many of the parents can speak some English, others cannot. It is vital for young students to hear a story out loud: to inspire them to be lifelong readers, helping them learn how to follow a story line, giving them the opportunity to find words they know, building confidence, and more. The students in my class may not have lots of books at home or even someone that can read to them, but each of them already has a love for books. Many get frustrated when flipping the pages of a book where the text is nothing more than lines, circles, and dots. But when given the choice of many different games and centers, most of my kids will choose the listening center, where something as simple as a recorded reader brings a book to life and encourages my students further! Each child is bright and tenacious, willing to overcome any obstacles that may be in his or her way!
