Being an educator is more than teaching students academic skills. We are also key in teaching students social-emotional skills like self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness. Recently, a study by the Columbia University Center for Benefit-Cost Studies in Education found that every dollar invested in SEL has a societal return of $11. Since COVID-19, educator and student wellbeing is more important now than ever before. In light of this, I cannot pass up this inspiring, evidence-based training.
I feel a need to learn effective strategies that will help my students learn how to be best humans they can be at school and outside of school. Learning wellness tools like mindfulness and yoga empower students to love, take care of, and advocate for themselves and others. These tools can help our students cope with the trauma that accompanies growing up in poverty.
This project will help tremendously in covering the cost of the Breathe for Change training program, which will help me build on what I know about mindfulness. This program will also enable me to share the positive change I've experienced with my current and future students, as well as colleagues, and school district as a whole.
Breathe for Change is a wellness training program conceived by educators for educators. Upon graduation from Breathe for Change, I will become certified as a Social Emotional Learning Facilitator (SEL*F) to lead wellness and social-emotional learning programs for both students and for other educators. Additionally, I will earn a nationally recognized CYT-200 Yoga Teacher Certification. This 6 month program enhances the well being of educators, students, and greater school communities by training educators in the meaningful areas of meditation, philosophy, anatomy, SEL, and yoga practice.
