Having books in the classroom the students can identify with makes a difference. I have had students that did not want to read; pick up books to read because of the interest area.

Writing for most of my students is the one area they do not want to do and it shows in the general classroom. Having the books of interest in the classroom allowed the students to pick what they wanted to read and therefore allowed them to express themselves better they could identify with the language and figure out words to use to express themselves in writing.

As a result I saw students who came to me everyday for help when it came to reading eventually, not come to me at all by the end of the semester which let me know they got it! They realized what was being asked of them to do because we would read and then write a paragraph about each chapter. By the end of the book, they had a good 20 paragraphs or more they could turn into a paper on the book with introduction, body and summary. Thank you so much for Becoming By Michelle Obama; New Kidd & Hidden Figures/Harper; Punching the Air by Salaam; and Brown Girl Dreaming by Nancy Paulsen books.”

With gratitude,
