  • Mental Health Matters at Mater Academy East!

    The Social Emotional Learning classes at our school allow students to connect with each other and share their thoughts and opinions. My SEL class consists of about 20 students. They love their journals, especially because the writing prompts are interesting and fun. Some of them have admitted that the topics make them think out of the box and tune in to their true feelings.

    Small groups gather to play with the SEL dice and they have made game rules that range from ways to get 2 rolls in one go, the ability to roll for someone else, and even points earned that allow them to ask anyone in the room the question on the die. To say the least, SEL is more enjoyable with our additional supplies. Thank you!”

    My students are so very comfortable and in position for learning Algebra each day. They love having the option to order hot and cold beverages if they've earned enough behavioral points. We offer water, capri sun, crystal light, hot tea, hot chocolate, and hot apple cider.

    All of high school can patronize the beverage bar. The best part is that the beverage bar inspires them to be on their best behavior in all of their classes so they accumulate more points! Thank you so much for this wonderful addition to our classroom.”

  • Inspirational Seating Options

    Thank you so much for helping my students be more comfortable in class! The inspirational seating options made students look forward to coming to class. We have benches and tables, a couch, wing chairs, and traditional desks. The mix has caused students to get to class before the bell rings, in the hopes of sitting in their favorite area. This is probably one of the greatest benefits... minimizing tardiness.

    When our classroom seating changed it gave an added boost to our environment. As the students say, "Our class is a whole vibe now." I am also proud to admit they are all taking very good care of our things. I remind them that it will only be as nice as you treat it.

    Next year we will be adding a beverage bar to our room. Students will be able to use behavioral points (PBIS) to buy water, tea, hot coco, and apple cider along with healthy snacks. I am very excited and my students are as well!”

  • Whale Watching with Classmates: Learning while Creating Lifelong Memories

    Funded Nov 3, 2021

    On February 18, 2022, 9th and 10th graders at Mater Academy East in Las Vegas, NV went Whale Watching in Newport Beach, CA. The masks donated from Donors Choose provided both safety and a wonderful keep-sake for such a memorable trip. Many of the students continued wearing their mask to school after the trip. We raised money to have them printed with the year and name of the trip so that everyone was easy to locate while away. THANK YOU so much!

    We will be using our tshirts for an end of year event. The multiple sizes are sure to make every student available to participate. We will be painting our rocks in the last week of school as a reminder to how strong we were through a rough time... solid as a rock!

Having a tranquil fish tank provides a space for students to retreat to when they're not having the best day. Most importantly, it keeps students in the room while decompressing as opposed to sending them to detention, the office, or another classroom. There will be plenty of workspace at the same station, so students are still able to be engaged and not miss assignments. By donating to our Tranquil Waters project, you will empower students to positively shift their mindset when their mood swings or when life throws curveballs. Unfortunately, my students come from many disadvantaged backgrounds that have a constant need for de-escalating situations. Additionally, caring for the fish and the upkeep of the tank builds responsibility to the very tool that offers them solace.

About my class
