A calming corner is an area in the room with materials such as sensory sand and wobble cushions, that is geared to help students self-regulate. When visiting this area, students center themselves with sensory items of choice, preventing overstimulation and anxiety. For students with autism, this area makes a tremendous impact on their ability to activate mindfulness and feel grounded. As adults, we subconsciously find ways to alleviate stress; some of us fidget with our hair, rub our jeans, or search for grainy surfaces. Just imagine, not having to “find” and how comforting it will be to have a special peaceful place to self-soothe. You can donate that! We will be so thankful!
