Reading is a daily activity in our classroom. Whether the students are reading independently or we are participating in a classroom read-aloud, our class is able to utilize our unique prior experiences to connect with our texts and build our love for reading. This project will help our class to build a classroom library that reflects the diversity within our classroom community. Our class is diverse in relation to gender, race, economic circumstances, background experiences and is fully inclusive of those with disabilities. Our classroom library should reflect each of these unique individuals. Building a diverse library will help engage the students by being able to relate to the books on more than just a surface level. Before, during, and after our read alouds we will discuss the book. While we work to build our academic skills through retell, sequencing, or with literary elements, we will also use our personal experiences to share how we are similar to the characters, events, or setting for example. Building a classroom library where students can recognize themselves in the books surrounding them not only builds a strong sense of belonging, but also build important social and emotional skills such as respect for each other and acceptance of differences. By creating a strong classroom community built on respect for one another, our class will be able to be confident in taking risks, be able to grow academically, socially and emotionally as individuals, and establish a love for reading all of which will help each individual find success in a safe and welcoming environment.
