"Screaming Quietly" and "Mexican Whiteboy" give me the opportunity to teach lifelong reading skills through highly engaging and culturally relevant literature to struggling readers in 11th grade. We will build a community within our classroom by having open discussions in a safe and fair environment about each novel, while learning new comprehension strategies and applying throughout each reading. Students will greatly benefit from the opportunity to feel a connection to literacy and build relationships with peers through open discussions within the classroom.
Many students miss the opportunity to share their thoughts and/or connections with others while reading through a text and these novels will provide those opportunities. Students will not only be building literacy skills; they will be learning about themselves and how to be empathetic, accepting, and confident.
