The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them options to use positive coping skills to be creative, explore their artistic hobbies, and work on social skills. The students are learning to practice regulation skills when they are overwhelmed, upset, or distraught. Rather than using a negative coping skill, yelling or using negative self-talk, the students can explore creative ways to share what they are feeling. Two to three times a week, students leave their mainstream classroom when they are overwhelmed and needing time to regulate/ground themself. There are times that the emotions are so severe that they cannot verbally express themselves. If there were options for creative expression, students could disclose thoughts artistically when they might not be able to share their thoughts otherwise. Having an artistic outlet will help them learn productive ways to express themselves while practicing self-care through painting and drawing. Students that are struggling will also be able to connect with others when feeling isolated. This will build an even closer community among my students. I have seen how giving options to use creativity to express themselves in a positive way can affect my students' work and overall attitude. I hope that the additional options will help us even more!
