  • Normalizing Menstrual Needs!

    Funded Jun 1, 2023

With the wonderful success of this project, we were able to put several dozen menstrual pouches together to have readily available to hand out in the nurse's office to young ladies in need. We were able to put together enough pouches that each fourth-grade girl will be given one when given "the talk" this school year to learn about their body's development and still have enough extras on hand to stock the nurse's office for anyone who goes down in need of menstrual supplies.

Each waterproof pouch is equipped with 4 sanitary napkins and a color print out with directions on using and disposing of the pad appropriately. There was also a link leading to a demonstration of how to use a pad appropriately and other resources for families to explore together at home.

I share a sincere thank you to the donors of this project! Thank you for supporting the health and development of our young ladies that attend Apollo-Ridge Elementary School. I hope to possibly expand this project in the future to include the middle school and high school nurse's office as well.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kenzevich

  • Taking a Stand for Learning

    Funded Aug 16, 2022

My students were so excited once the desks were built, that I was actually worried about behaviors and students fussing over taking turns using them. I was blown away at how the standing desks actually changed the atmosphere in my room for the better! Students respect the space as an independent working space or as a small group work together space. Some have even made a point of suggesting to other students that they use the standing desks when they notice someone is getting antsy. They are used all day long! Whether it is in small group math class, recess, or if the kids want to help water down our classroom plants! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kenzevich

  • Let's Make It a Hands on Learning Kind of Day!

    Funded Nov 16, 2021

I just want to start with a quick, but sincere thank you!! So far my 4th and 5th grade students have had the opportunity to use the Operations and Algebraic Thinking Folder Games many times and absolutely LOVE THEM! We also, just started our measurement units for both grades and had the opportunity to do several hands on activities with the Gallon Measurement Set we received in our order. They are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to play the two Grab and Match games as well. Once we get a little further into our Measurement and Data Units we will make them into a center station. I wish you could hear the (very loud) thank you my students yelled out loud to our generous donors!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Kenzevich

These tools will help students take a hands on approach to learning 4th and 5th grade math concepts. Using a hands on learning approach in the math classroom will help students make connections to the material they are learning as well as make it fun and interactive. We will use these items during guided small group instruction time, and the students will have access to them during independent practice time. Hands-on activities provides students with the opportunity to engage both sides of the brain while learning. Students use the left side of their brain to analyze and process information, and the right to visualize and process spatial reasoning to manipulate the tools being utilized. This method allows the opportunity to combine multiple styles of learning to help the brain to form a stronger connection to the material and helps the students file away more relevant information as they complete the activities. A few of the tools and activities requested will help my 4th and 5th grade students stay engaged during our measurement and data unit. This unit falls at the end of the school year after we take the PSSA's. It is a long unit and we try to make sure the students have fun with it and learn as much about the concepts are they can. They will learn both the metric and customary units of measurement for capacity, length, and width. Last year we had the opportunity to go outside with a collection of meter sticks and record various measurements of objects found around the property. I hope to expand the fun this year with the tools and activities listed under this project. The rest of the resources will be useful throughout the year for other skills that will be built upon from unit to unit.
