School counselors have recently been added to all Providence elementary schools; a necessary addition that has been missing for over ten years. Especially now, school counselors at the elementary level will be beneficial in helping teachers support students' social and emotional needs. As we return to school after a disruptive, and traumatic, past two years, students will have a welcoming space outside of the classroom where they can feel safe to share their thoughts and feelings. Students deserve a peaceful space where they will meet with the school counselor as individuals, and in groups. These materials will allow me to renovate an area of the school that has been ignored for many years. With a little extra love (and these new supplies!), I will be able to create a welcoming place for students to learn, practice, and discuss social and emotional skills to become more successful students. Social and emotional learning is an integral part of education. In this space, students will begin the lifelong process of learning how to better understand themselves, connect with others, support positive mental health, and work with others to achieve academic and career goals. Many of the materials will be used as students work on individual assignments around topics such as goal setting, identifying and dealing with emotions, the importance of attending school, and dealing with trauma. The flexible seating will support students in doing this work, and will encourage students to share ideas with the counselor and group members. Other materials will promote a collaborative classroom in which groups can easily discuss various topics in which they need extra support. This space will encourage students to discuss difficulties so they can return to class with strategies that enable them to be successful in their academic learning.
