As a new teacher, I am trying to provide my students with meaningful materials to support lessons. It is important for students to make connections between what they learn in the classroom and what goes on in the real world. The fiction novel, Ant Hill by E.O. Wilson, follows the life of a boy who is a self-taught naturalist, and when the land near his home is threatened by development, he takes an interesting path to protect the land and the species living within it. This book does an incredible job of showing the challenges and legalities an environmentalist might face, as well as provide imagery of the beautiful Nokobee forest located in Mobile, Alabama. I plan to use this novel to provide examples of biodiversity, conservation efforts, and what it might look like behind the scenes of environmental issues. Students will be able to relate to this novel as it is set in a coastal area of the South East which is similar to where my students live. By reading a story, students will be able to relate what we talk about in the classroom to a beloved character. Additionally, the author thoroughly describes the intricate nature of anthills. By providing students with an ant farm, they too can observe the complexity of the habitat beneath their feet.
