  • Pictures Are Worth 1,000 Words

    Funded Dec 28, 2021

Thank you so much for supporting our school's library collection. Our students will benefit so greatly from these books.

Graphic novels develop all students as readers, but these books are especially appealing to reluctant readers. These books allow students to develop reading skills like inferencing and punctuation. These novels reinforce grammar rules and do a great job of exploring figurative language for readers. Students can observe and lear about emotions by observing the images on the page as they read the story. It increases comprehension by allowing the words and pictures to create a fuller picture in their minds. The bonus is kids love them and as proof they make up a large percentage of circulations in the library.”

  • A Celebration of Culture: Storytelling through Art

    Funded Jan 12, 2022

This semester my students materials to celebrate and learn about influential artists of color. They will create in the tradition of clay and fabric with local artists as guest speakers. In experiencing viewpoints from other cultures, races, religions and countries students will build empathy and world views that will serve them later as they enter adulthood and choose careers. We live in a global society and storytelling through art is a great way to allow students a glimpse of it.

Students will learn to 3D CAD and print stamps which will be used in their ceramic production line. Students will work with clay by creating stamped production pieces which will then be glazed and fired. We will work with the Greenville Museum of Art to learn how pottery was created by Dave the Potter as both functional and a form of resistance. Students will then move on to the fabric arts by investigating a local exhibit of Arianne King Comer (https://ariannekingcomerart.com/). She creates and uses her pieces to tell stories of celebration, joy and resistance. The children will use the batik process to dye fabric and then stitch together to create a display quilt.”

  • Building an Inclusive World

    Funded Nov 30, 2021

Design Thinking is a methodology used by designers to help them solve complex problems and create solutions & products that meet people's needs. It's solution-based thinking that starts with a general goal, not just a specific problem to help create broader ideas. This opportunity needs to be introduced and cultivated in our children to broaden their life-long goals and equip them with 21st Century skills!

These books and materials will expand the Makerspace in our library with fixed and flexible stations to allow students the opportunity to learn, receive lessons, investigate and problem solve as a team and explore individually. The magnatiles will be an additional resource that will enable the MakerSpace to extend into the classrooms.

Thank you so much for the investment in my students and their development.”

  • Windows and Mirrors in Literature

    Funded Nov 29, 2021

I want to give my students books that can offer them books that will mirror their lives and allow them opportunity to see how other people's lives unfold. In experiencing viewpoints from other cultures, races, religions and countries students will build empathy and world views that will serve them later as they enter adulthood and chose careers. We live in a global society and literature is a great way to allow students a glimpse of it

My students deserve to see themselves in books for both pleasure reading and in nonfiction texts as career opportunities. Representation matters and a large majority of my students currently cannot find themselves in our collection. Of the 4800 books we have, only 400 have characters of non white protagonists. This is an equity issue and is damaging to my students.

I would like to offer my students current information. I need these texts to be authentic, current, and high low texts to allow for all children to broaden their knowledge.”

  • Just BREATHE Through It

    Funded Nov 22, 2021

This tumultuous world we live in is full of anxiety producing catalysts for my little ones to become overwhelmed. Social Emotional Learning is a cornerstone of my primary program in the library. Each week we examine ideas and actions with books that encourage mindfulness and growth mindset. Challenges can be something to look forward to, rather than shy away from. We end each read aloud with some yoga stretches and some mindfulness before we move into activities like build challenges.

I do not have any books in my library collection that have yoga and mindfulness as their main intention. I would like to expand my aged collection to include this vital part and develop the WHOLE child. The books in this project will encourage students to see themselves as brave, courageous, calm, and open. I am excited to use them both as read aloud, but also to share with teachers and our guidance counselor for one on one chats.”

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

I want to offer non fiction titles that are both windows and mirrors. This term was coined by Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop. My students deserve to see themselves in books for both pleasure reading and in nonfiction texts as career opportunities. Representation matters and a large majority of my students currently cannot find themselves in our collection. This is an equity issue and is damaging to my students.

  • Mirrors and Windows in Literature

    Funded Oct 21, 2021

My aged library collection does not reflect all of the students who visit it. I want to give my students books that can offer them books that will mirror their lives and allow them opportunity to see how other people's lives unfold. In experiencing viewpoints from other cultures, races, religions and countries students will build empathy and world views that will serve them later as they enter adulthood and chose careers. We live in a global society and literature is a great way to allow students a glimpse of it.

Our school has a very aged collection which does not reflect the standards taught by teachers, but more importantly does not mirror the children in attendance at my school. Equity and representation are important to me and sorely lacking in our collection.

Your donations have started the change we are enacting to ensure all our students see themselves and worlds are opened are available to them.”

This opportunity needs to be introduced and cultivated in our children to broaden their life-long goals and equip them with 21st Century skills!

In the library makerspace we are purposeful in our use of technology, so students are not consumers, but creators. We expand our research skills with online research databases, online evaluation techniques, 3D modeling and block coding to name a few things. Kids are drawn to robots and enjoy using them, so we use their fascination to "sneak" in tech, content area curriculum, and 21st century soft skills (problem solving, critical thinking, etc). With essential, relevant and enduring questions our children find new purpose at school, are able to use their voice and in my space are given unlimited choice to showcase their knowledge and talents.

The tools were were allowed through Donor's Choose will allow our dreams, learning and innovation to come to a reality. These tools give students the opportunity to explore the world, enhances their understanding of our roles/gifts and invites them to discovering their place in it .”

The library at JS is not your typical media center. The maker mindset began here for our students and is cultivated every week in the library. Students are invited to change their negative understanding of failure, determine their own direction, research and innovate solutions to problems, and participate in literacy based or student initiated build challenges. Students engage in solving real-world problems through a transdisciplinary approach to learning focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics aided with the montessori lens. It is a flexible space with art/construction materials, circuitry, robotics and tools. The area has fixed and flexible stations which allow students the opportunity to investigate and problem solve as a team and explore individually.
