Pictures Are Worth a 1000 Words
Funded May 1, 2023Using Dr. Rudine Bishop's words that books provide "mirrors and windows", we believe this book will allow our students a chance to reflect, discuss and support each other in the historically disadvantaged members of our society. When students do not see themselves in books, a message is sent that their personhood isn't as legitimate, they are a sidebar, they don't have stories to tell. When students do see themselves, they are celebrated, acknowledged and become part of the narrative/community. We need both windows and mirrors in order to grow in our opinions of others as well, experience life outside of our own confines, and celebrate the communities we are a part of.
Graphic novels help bring children into books with an appealing format. We appreciate your donations to our school library and the benefit these books provide are children are limitless.”

Funded Feb 3, 2023My students designed and created their own restaurants, logos and signature dishes. They explored a variety of art areas such as graphic design, 3D printing, and clay with local Black creatives as guest speakers. Students built their own "restaurants" experimenting with mediums and hearing from working artists which will serve them later as they enter adulthood and choose careers. Students moved from paper and pencil to 3D CAD design and printed their logos. Students built a realistic sample "dish" using clay, which will then be fired, painted and displayed in a realistic table setting. We learned so much and are appreciative of donors like you who believe in helping students have these experiences and giving them glimpses into future careers.”

Our middle school population is primarily children of color. Book publishers have historically not provided mirrors to my students and in the removal of books like the one we have chosen, further ignore issues that have long gone undiscussed and ignored students' questions and place for discussion.”

Funded Jul 25, 2022Design Thinking is a methodology used by designers to help them solve complex problems and create solutions & products that meet people's needs. It's solution-based thinking that starts with a general goal, not just a specific problem to help create broader ideas. This opportunity needs to be introduced and cultivated in our children to broaden their life-long goals and equip them with 21st Century skills!
In the library makerspace we are purposeful in our use of technology, so students are not consumers, but creators. We expand our research skills with online research databases, online evaluation techniques, 3D modeling and block coding to name a few things. Kids are drawn to robots and enjoy using them, so we use their fascination to "sneak" in tech, content area curriculum, and 21st century soft skills (problem solving, critical thinking, etc). With essential, relevant and enduring questions our children find new purpose at school, are able to use their voice and in my space are given unlimited choice to showcase their knowledge and talents.”

Funded Apr 7, 2022Creativity, collaboration and critical thinking are all soft skills needed to be successful and innovative in life. Curriculums are often full of information and necessary for success as well, but do not always invite these soft skills to be flexed. Enter a makerspace. In this area, students are encouraged to try, to fail and to reiterate. It is a place full of honesty and discomfort. Being willing to fail is something not always invited in classrooms, but in my makerspace it is applauded. Reworking the idea of failure in the mindsets of these children is so vital for their ability to adapt. These materials will help the students try, fail and try again. I appreciate your belief in these children and the power they will gain from the process!”

Funded Feb 23, 2022Reading is a skill vital for success in academic life. Learning to read should be fun, but it can become a daunting task, full of pitfalls and frustrations if children are not surrounded by books that celebrate the reader and provide relief from the "work" of reading. This is where graphic novels and those in between books like The Bad Guy series come in.
The Bad Guys is a series of clever adventures filled with plenty of extreme silliness, crazy antics, wild adventure, and a teensy bit of potty humor — which means they are PERFECT for kids.
The Bad Guys are an awesome step between graphic novels and "regular" chapter books. I have never met a child who didn't find enjoyment in them. They are the perfect "trick" to hook kids on reading.”

Reading Is Something to Scream About!
Funded Feb 9, 2022Our library is a growing space full of makerspace, robotics and energy. What is missing from our equation of self directed learning and expression are books. Our collection numbers should reflect the required number of 15 to 1 books to children (as required by the state) and should reflect the students who utilized this space. My students deserve to see themselves in books for both pleasure reading and in nonfiction texts as career opportunities.
It is important that the books we have available to the students are enticing and allow students to experience world they inhabit and can imagine. These books will go a long way to allowing students who LOVE scary stories to grow in their love of the genre as well as readers.”
