As the 6th grade school counselor, students enter my office seeking a refuge. They want to be heard, seen, and valued. When I speak to students there is not one that will not fidget, touch things on my desk, or just stare initially. I want to provide them with resources that will encourage them to feel comfortable to speak, draw, write, or just sit in silence as needed. Anxiety, self-harm, suicide ideation, depression, abuse, peer and/or teacher conflicts are just a few of the issues that sixth graders as young as 11 years old enter my office with. After a year of dealing with Covid, winter storms, deaths, failing grades, and isolation, I can't imagine the stressors they will start the school year with. Each item requested will provide students with a safe haven and tools that will help them to process their feelings and emotions. They will know there is one place they can go to on campus and not feel alone. My office will be the place their social and emotional and academic needs will be focused on. Their first year in middle school will set the tone for the rest of their middle school career and with your help, they will be prepared to face whatever may come their way!
