Students in my classroom spend one day a week on learning journeys at or related to the kai or ocean. Living in Hawaiʻi, the areas we visit especially along the coastline have little to no shade. The natural environment is like our living classroom and a canopy tent would greatly benefit our learning journeys to allow us to work more hours outside. Two are requested because of social distancing requirements due to COVID-19. A collapsible folding wagon will help us transport these tents as well as other resources on learning journeys while on site and at our campus. Students will participate in cultural based activities related to science which involve the creation of art pieces related to the Kai. A request for a still intact oyster for our students to observe the natural process was made in addition to a pearl drilling machine to not only drill pearls but also seeds, coral, and shells found on our learning journeys. In order for our students to understand the natural environment from a life science based lens in class activity kits such as a kombucha starter kit, pH stripes to test the water quality while on learning journeys, and potting soil is requested to help strengthen their development of real life skills and their application of those skills. Lysol wipes are always useful to keep our learning environment clean. To boost student moral during these difficult times, we also write positive messages on the windows adjacent to our classroom as well as messages such as the names of students in different learning groups. Our students will be learning about a lot of plants this school year and wax paper will be used to press species into a book over the year.
