I teach at a Title I elementary school. My students are first and second graders who come from diverse backgrounds. Many are English language learners. After a challenging year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I want to create a seamless transition back into the classroom. One way to support the transition is through picture book read-alouds. Read-alouds can foster a strong sense of community, expand vocabulary, support budding readers and writers, spark collaborative conversations, and encourage perspective-taking/ empathy. The picture books I have chosen will spark students' interest when they make connections to the characters or events in each book. They will learn about other cultures and traditions in some books and empathy or coping with strong emotions in others. Some books I have chosen will be used to support our first and second-grade reading curriculums by building foundational skills, introducing vocabulary, and modeling fluency. Using these picture books, I will be able to teach the whole brain, not just the standards.
