Part of student independence includes growing knowledge about healthy food choices and the ability to navigate a basic kitchen. ATP students not only learn about using kitchen basics like a microwave, slow cooker and toaster oven, we also learn about food groups and nutrition. We use grocery ads to make a shopping list on a budget then shop in our local stores. Other times, students use technology to research recipes with a focus ingredient. A class favorite was quinoa chili in the slow cooker. Together we prepare and try many foods they can recreate at home with their families. Whether it is making a healthy snack, packing a lunch to take to a new job, or being a part of preparing a meal, fresh and perishable foods are a part of our menus. Having a refrigerator will give us storage that will allow us to shop more economically and have more variety.
