I strive for a classroom of independent learners. But, in order to get to this point, it takes many days and weeks to build the capacity to solve problems critically, make wise decisions based on academic, social, and emotional needs, and teach, practice, and implement routines and expectations. Having flexible seating options in the classroom is an important step in developing independent learners. When students have some control over their learning environment, including where and how they sit, collaboration, critical thinking, and increased concentration results! Flexible seating means they can move out of their hard, stationary chairs and find a better place to work somewhere else in the classroom. When I introduce flexible seating options to my students, I teach them how to use the seat, practicing right from wrong. We set up a rotation so that everyone gets opportunities to sit in the flexible seating options. Students sign a contract agreeing to the expectations set forth. It is a beautiful thing to see students scattered about in the classroom, working hard on math, reading, or writing, and on the road to independent learning. Thank you for helping me make this a reality!
