Funded Aug 22, 2023We have started incorporated the multicultural books into our daily read-aloud sessions. One project we started is 'Cultural Storytime,' where students each choose a book from a different culture, and we discuss the values, traditions, and lessons from that story. It's been incredible to see students make connections between their own backgrounds and the stories we read. For example, after reading a story about family traditions, students were excited to share about their own family celebrations.
When the students first saw the multicultural books, their faces lit up! They were excited to find characters who looked like them or shared similar backgrounds. For some, it was the first time they saw their heritage represented in a book. They eagerly picked up the books and started flipping through the pages, pointing out things that felt familiar. It was an inspiring moment to witness how much representation matters.
Next, we'll then share the stories with the school community in a special 'Diverse Voices' reading event.”
With gratitude,
