  • English Language Development Tools for MLLs!

    Funded Aug 22, 2023

    We have started incorporated the multicultural books into our daily read-aloud sessions. One project we started is 'Cultural Storytime,' where students each choose a book from a different culture, and we discuss the values, traditions, and lessons from that story. It's been incredible to see students make connections between their own backgrounds and the stories we read. For example, after reading a story about family traditions, students were excited to share about their own family celebrations.

    When the students first saw the multicultural books, their faces lit up! They were excited to find characters who looked like them or shared similar backgrounds. For some, it was the first time they saw their heritage represented in a book. They eagerly picked up the books and started flipping through the pages, pointing out things that felt familiar. It was an inspiring moment to witness how much representation matters.

    Next, we'll then share the stories with the school community in a special 'Diverse Voices' reading event.”

  • Multicultural Reading

    The books that you have all helped purchase for my classroom have been a great help to my students. The students were overjoyed to have books with characters that they can relate too. They heard familiar words, familiar settings and experiences. This helped them discuss more with each other and with their teacher. My younger students were excited to see the beautiful illustrations that depicted the characters that looked like them. I even had a first grade student say, "that's me, my mom and my dad" when reading "Hair Love." I would like to say more but I'll let their letters to you do the talking. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

  • Helping ELLs Excel!

    I can't explain how thankful I am for your funding to our materials. The students were excited to have hands on learning experiences. The materials helped my older newcomer ELL students write new words and match them with pictures. The visuals helped them a lot. To follow up, I had them write sentences with the new words they learned. This created a great writing opportunity for them. For my younger students, I was able to assess their phonics and letter recognition. Overall these were perfect materials for my ELL students. They look forward to working with them everyday.”

These students have been facing a tough situation with the pandemic. Remote learning for them meant that their English has been slipping away because they were speaking solely their native tongue at home. English language learners need more opportunities to increase their vocabulary, including academic vocabulary. There has to be a heavy focus on reading fluency and concepts of print. Students also need to be exposed to listening to English and practicing it independently. These resources are perfect for their language development.
