The student who would benefit from the netbook (laptop) struggles with effective socialization and communication with his peers, as well as, school staff. Due to his disability in the area of autism spectrum disorder and low socioeconomic status, the student lacks the resources necessary to engage in meaningful conversation, school activities and completion of assignments. The school which the student attends is a Title I school; he receives free lunch. The student is not living with his parents but is in the care of the State. The student is in the tenth grade and currently reads at a fourth grade level. He cannot read his science, social sciences, or mathematics books nor can he read the assigned books of literature. He writes on a second grade level; he struggles with expressing his thoughts by writing them on paper. The ideas he has get lost in the transition from his mind to the paper. The student is very intelligent and can achieve his aspirations with technological assistance.
