First graders are expected to make so much growth in their reading development. This requires a systematic and explicit approach, especially in decoding/encoding. Decoding is essential to reading. It allows students to figure out most words they have heard but never seen in print. The ability to decode is the foundation upon which all other reading instruction is built. These hands-on decoding activities will be used during small group instruction time. Small groups of students will work at the reading table, receiving instruction from the teacher. The other students will need activities to work on independently and in small groups while they are waiting for their turn with the teacher. It's often difficult to find center time activities that are both highly engaging and give students the practice they need in their decoding/encoding development. First graders love games and hands on activities. These fun hands on activities will give students the practice they need while allowing them to have fun and enjoy time with peers. By donating to our project, you will not only help this year's class to become amazing readers, but classes for years to come as these activities can be used for multiple years and multiple classes.
