This iPad with Apple Care and protective case will allow teachers like myself to reach out to my students' parents with important information regarding my class. On many occasions, students and parents have contacted me personally to explain and/or confirm some message they received from the school’s robot call or a teacher. Parents usually get written communication informing them of what is happening in the classroom, school, school district, and/or the city. While the written communication is usually translated in different languages, a lot of the parents do not read it, or, if they do, some might not understand the message.
This project aims to increase parent awareness and involvement in their children’s education by varying the means of communication. Instead of solely written communication, we will also send parents a video/audio recorded reading of the message. We will explain or summarize the information in their language directly on their cell phone through WhatsApp, an application that almost all parents have installed on their phone.
We will start by surveying the parents as to their preferred communication language through WhatsApp. Next, we will create one group chat for all parents and other smaller group chats by language they speak. Finally, volunteer multilingual staff and students will record a video/audio in different languages and send it through the respective group chats.
If successful, this initiative will allow communication to be:
Received and understood from the teachers and other school staff in a timely manner, Provided in ways that are more accessible to families, Responded timely by parent and guardians.
I was originally looking to buy an unlocked cellphone but did not have that option. No worries because the iPad will have almost the same functions needed for this project.
