As students begin to develop into fluent readers in second grade, it is important that every individual student in the classroom can find books that represent themselves. Students are often drawn to books that they can relate to, encouraging independent reading in the classroom. Diverse representation in children’s literature is critical because it empowers the reader by seeing themselves in books. If the main character is a hero, for example, it gives the student the idea of how they could also be heroic. Also, children’s world views are expanded by seeing people who are different from themselves represented in books. These books will be welcome additions to our print-rich classroom library.
