Due to COVID-19, our students have had a tough couple of years in the classroom with online learning. The third graders I'm teaching now haven't had a "normal" school year since the middle of Kindergarten. I teach in a low-income area of the valley where 100% of my students are on free lunch. They love coming to school and a lot of our students have little to no support at home during the day due to parents working. When my students returned to the classroom I wasn't sure what to expect. When we did our benchmark assessments I saw students who struggle to read at all and other students who are reading above grade level. I want to make sure this year all my students get what they need. That is why for my project I wanted to focus on differentiated small group reading instruction where I have selected multiple chapter books at different reading levels. I want to use these during small group instruction. By allowing students to work with texts that they understand they will have a better chance of being able to understand and apply the 3rd-grade reading skills we are learning. I also think it promotes the love of reading by getting to share and discuss what their reading with their peers. It will also target the reading foundational skills standards!
