I teach science and social studies to a group of low income, but highly motivated students. Due to the student's economic status, having project based learning is hard since students are not able to bring in supplies or provide class donations to increase the classroom materials. With this project, I will be able to allow my students to learn in a hands on way. Some of the materials that I added to my project are STEM kits, to allow students their independent exploration time, to create what they want to. I also added composition notebooks to use as science notebooks for students to create foldables, draw their observations and really be able to explain their experiments. A third thing I added was an incubator. This will be used during our animal studies unit for students to explore the life cycle of a chicken. These students will be responsible for checking the temperature of the eggs daily, candling the eggs to identify the stage of incubation that the eggs are in, and finally when the eggs hatch, the students will take care of the chickens. With these materials, I hope to bring back a bit of normalcy to these students after a year of changes due to COVID. I don't want my students to look back at their time in elementary school and all they remember is being quarantined. I want them to look back at their time in elementary school and remember all of the hands-on and project based learning that they got to be a part of.
