My students are high school students with mild/moderate/severe disabilities with a wide range of sensory needs. Students learn the necessary coping tools and social skills that will help them be successful. Students will need to learn how to regulate their emotional and behavioral responses to sensory stimulation by going to the calming corner, offering noise canceling headphones, and/or sensory tools and fidget objects. I also use sensory integration across content areas and provide opportunities for sensory output to achieve deeper learning. Doing so, students will have greater retention of content and the ability to think about the material at a more complex level. In my classroom, I use a token economy system with pictures for positive reinforcement to encourage desired behavior. Students are able to select their desired item (i.e. bubbles, sensory toy, or snack).
