These "toys" will make a huge difference in my classroom. I have been doing a lot of research on having more play in the upper elementary classrooms as play sometimes takes the back burner when all of the required materials needs to be presented in a timely fashion. I thought a great way to do this would be to allow for more play in the morning when the children arrive at school. Normally when the kids arrive they have a handful of morning jobs and then some morning work to complete but I am ready to give them something even better! Their morning work might include review from past lessons or a challenge page on what might be to come in their learning. Rather than continue this morning worksheet routine I found a great way to keep the kids busy and engaged while I finish the morning tasks, that need to be done on my end, is to create STEM bins. Each morning 3-4 children grab a bin with a specific set up STEM toys and they let their mind and hands do the rest. This gets their brains moving in an exciting and creative way each day. They think they are playing but they are really learning. STEM bins not only help with teamwork but they help the children build their problem solving, creativity and so much more.
