Creating Mathematical Readers
Funded Nov 9, 2021I want to start by thanking you for donating to my classroom. These books have been such a blessing to my lessons; as well as the enrichment of some of my students. We have a campus wide program called "Serie-ous About Reading." This program is to encourage students to get invested in a book series. Studies have shown that students are more likely to continue reading and enjoy reading when they get connected to a character or plot. Thanks to your generous donations, I now have 4 book series available to students in my classroom. Math Inspectors, Math Adventures, Sir Cumference, and The Math Kids series. I have a handful of students that have committed to reading a certain series out of the collection. Some have already finished two or three books out of the series. I teach 4th grade math and I am so impressed when I have students coming to me to talk about how they learned about the diameter of a circle, what Pi means, and so much more advanced math. I have other students who want to stop in the middle of the books to take time to solve the math problems hidden in the pages and they get so excited to tell me about them. These books have shown to be a great addition to incorporating my math curriculum and their love for reading.
In addition to my book series', I was also able to get some short fictional and informational books that are great to introduce specific lessons. For example, my students really enjoyed me introducing perimeter and area with a book that talks about how certain careers apply their knowledge of perimeter and area to complete a task. Some of my students even made real life connections with the book because their parents happened to work in construction, which was one of the careers discussed in the book. This made them more eager to learn perimeter and area after realizing how valuable it is for adults; rather than it just being another skill they are forced to learn in school.
These books have helped bring so much excitement for math into my classroom. They have, also, brought the understanding of the importance of math beyond school. Understanding the "why" for learning helps instill the "want" for learning. I truly appreciate everything these books have done for my students and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Sierra Lewis
