These books will provide opportunities for my students from underrepresented cultural backgrounds to see themselves and their families in stories. At our school, we strive to make all students and families feel seen and valued. In addition to celebrating cultural holidays and heritage months, we are committed to updating our curriculum and book offerings to reflect students' cultural backgrounds. Younger readers connect better to stories that they can relate to. I plan to use the books from this project in two ways. First, I will use some of the books, such as "Martin's Dream" and "Separate is Never Equal" to teach about civil rights history. However, it is important for children from underrepresented cultural backgrounds not just to see stories of exceptional heroism and oppression, but also to see themselves in mundane children's stories like losing a tooth. I will use some of the books, such as "My Papi Has a Motorcycle" that features a Latinx family riding around a vibrant immigrant neighborhood, and "Jabari Jumps" that features a black family at the public pool, in our daily Reader's Workshop lessons that focus on comprehension skills.
