Lost in Reading - Travel the World
Funded Aug 2, 2021Reading can ignite a child's imagination. Through reading, a child learns he or she can go anywhere and experience things dreams are made of. Your donation has made it possible for children to learn what it is like to fly through space, to captain a ship, to protect others, and even how other children live and play in other parts of the land. They are even learning about the countries they came from, including Afghanistan, Malaysia, Central African Republic, or The Democratic Republic of Congo
The day the books arrived that you donated to my class will remain etched in my memory forever. Books were placed on a table and in a crate and I asked them to choose a book to preview. I turned and almost every child did not have one book but three and four. The excitement in the classroom was electric. Each child found a spot on the floor, laid out their books, and began to look at each one. As they previewed their books, they began calling to each other to come look at their books. Before long, they were asking if they could take the books home.
The initial book introduction was with my homeroom students - students who are in third grade and reading below and on kindergarten reading levels. The books will provide platforms for lessons on main ideas and supporting details, comparing and contrasting, point of view, as well as basic reading foundations. The books will help the children learn connections to self and connections to the world.
The road for these children will be long and bumpy, but thanks to you, they have resources now to stimulate their imagination and intelligence. Thank you not only for the gift of reading but for contributing to their intellectual growth. Your donations mean more than just a book purchase and the children and I are extremely grateful.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Johns
