My school is embarking on a new mission to encourage all of our students to begin thinking like an engineer. I am excited to be able to provide my students with hands-on learning opportunities which will motivate and inspire them to see themselves as engineers. In order to accomplish this task, my students must be put in situations where they can collaborate with their peers, persevere through challenges, and begin to create a critical thinking mindset. Engineers as a group, seem to enjoy discovering new ways to make life better. I want to help my students become members of this unique group of learners by providing them with an environment that cultivates critical thinking and values outside the box reasoning. Many of my students are coming from backgrounds where they may not have had a lot of opportunities to explore engineering concepts. The STEM products that I am purchasing will play an important role in helping them discover how the design process works and how they can use this process to solve many problems. Each resource provides students with the opportunity to use the steps in the design process to create or build a product. They will be able to collaborate with each other to discuss their ideas, create a product , then determine if the product works like it was intended to work or if it needs to be modified. I cannot wait to see the excitement on their faces when they begin to see themselves as engineers.
