I am a new teacher who has inherited an empty classroom with blank walls to teach K-2 special education students in a low income public school.
Creating a comforting, calm, supportive environment is extremely important for supporting these student's special needs. The students can thrive, learn, and grow, but need the environment to be supportive before they can focus on academics. These students have autism, dyslexia, and other learning disabilities that already make it hard for them to focus and need a structured, organized, less stimulating environment to learn in. Lighting is especially important in this environment.
