As Speech and Language Teachers, our overarching goal is for our students to enjoy their time in the speech room and to feel motivated to learn and to practice their language skills using literacy and books. We are surrounded by a group of amazing students and want to provide them even more opportunities to feel excited about speech and language by updating the books in our speech room to become more inclusive and engaging. Research on developing language skills demonstrates that a literacy based approach can show increased progress and generalization across language skills. This collection of books focuses on the inclusion of different identities, life experiences, and ability levels to motivate our students and to help them see themselves through literature. We have specifically chosen: a collection of nonverbal picture books to target different language skills such as story retell, sequencing, and main ideas supported by details, books which focus on self-advocacy when verbal speech may not be an option for our students, and books that let our students see themselves through the main characters and their experiences. Please consider contributing to the effort to diversify and update our speech room library-we've seen firsthand how a good book can positively impact our students and can help their speech and language skills grow.
