Over the years imaginative play has been replaced in the kindergarten classroom to meet the demanding standards children need to be prepared for first grade. While kindergarteners are fully capable of meeting these standards, they are missing out on communication and collaboration skills they gain through center time. My goal is to help my students reach their full potential by adding core academic skills to fun centers that allow them to further apply their learning and gain interest in specific academic areas through imaginative learning while meeting kindergarten standards. I plan on applying Science, Social Studies, Math and ELA standards to all my centers as a fun way to encourage learning. A few examples: Dramatic Play I will have students create a grocery list in alphabetical order, label, create menus, write facts about a community helper they dressed up as, add and subtract the cost of items, money recognition, and so much more! In science students can draw their observations and ask/write questions about things they see. They can create informative posters about the world around them using pictures, labels, captions, diagrams, etc. We can do this in Writing, Library, Phonics and Building Centers as well! The possibilities are endless! My goal each year is to create a fun and safe environment in my classroom where students develop a love for learning and wake up excited to start their day!
