Most of my students are the product of low-income families who do not possess the necessary tools to ensure student success. Reading comprehension and academic vocabulary instruction are the primary areas of concern within the current Alabama Literacy Act and are the lowest areas of performance for my students. While my 3rd-grade students are amazing readers who demonstrate the ability to decode complex words. The concern arises when students are required to decipher the meaning of these words or use them in the appropriate context. The acquiring of one-to-one informational texts for students will help develop their academic vocabulary and prepare them for the future.
