  • Mr. Shaffer's 2nd Graders Need Nonfiction

    Funded Aug 16, 2023

Thank you for your generous donation. I have updated and refined my classroom library a little each school year, but it has become more important since I transitioned from teaching upper elementary to second grade. So many of my students are still working to master vital reading skills, and expanding the kinds of books available in my collection will help readers of all tastes find something that interests them.

By giving to this project, you helped bring nonfiction books about plants, animals, and weather, realistic fiction picture books, a few nonfiction picture books to my emerging and thriving readers. There are books about social studies topics like neighborhoods, the Pledge of Allegiance, and economics topics like earning, saving, and spending; books about how seeds are spread and how mountains form; and even one about time.

Thank you again for making an impact on these young readers.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Shaffer

  • Early Chapter Books for Mr. Shaffer's 2nd Graders

    Funded Jul 15, 2022

I'm teaching a new grade level this year, which means I needed a whole lot of new books to accommodate younger readers, especially emerging readers. This project helped fill my library with books my second graders love.

"Bad Guys" and "The Notebook of Doom" are such big hits, I could create another project just to buy more copies of the ones in this set of books! I can't keep them on my shelf. My class library has always been a treasured part of my classroom, and you got to help it transform into something new. Thank you for your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Shaffer

  • Expanding Mr. Shaffer's Picture Book Selection

    Funded Jul 11, 2022

I was able to give my second grade students a more robust, diverse, and current selection of picture books thanks to your support. I got to bring in stories with humor and heart, bright, brilliant illustrations, and plot lines about caring, patience, and a few other social-emotional learning topics.

Some of my favorite books for my own children are now accessible to the students in my classroom. It's comforting to know immediately when I see a book in my kiddos' hands that they have a high-quality, engaging story to ready. I hope they enjoy them as much as my daughter and son do.

Thank you for making it possible to bring these books to my young readers.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Shaffer

  • Multicultural Biographies

    Funded Jan 30, 2022

When I first created this project, I was a fourth grade teacher. My teammates and I were working on biography reports for our reading class, and most of the resource books were about white men, some of whom are not people I would necessarily want to celebrate in my classroom. So I decided to order books of my own filled with women, people of color, and a small number of white men of strong character.

I have since been moved to second grade, but I was encouraged because the reading level of the books in the project is lower than I realized when I added them to my shopping list. I still have many students who won't necessarily be able to read these books fluently, but several of my strongest readers can pick any of these books up without a problem.

I hope to see more of these books show up in students' book boxes for independent reading time as the school year progresses. The young readers in my room will learn about some truly great people that are important parts of our nation's, and the world's, history.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Shaffer

  • Mr. Shaffer's Classroom Library

    Funded Aug 13, 2021

Your donations allowed me to bulk up the picture book selection in my classroom. In upper elementary, it's easy for kids to shy away from picture books when it comes time to choose something to read, but there are so many good stories students miss out on if they do. I've read a few out loud to my class to help showcase the new offerings, and I've seen many of them in my students' hands during our reading block.

Many of my kiddos have come to me below a fourth grade reading level, so having more books like this to choose from has been helpful. We talked about what a "good fit" book looks like, which is different from person to person. No one seems ashamed or embarrassed of reading a picture book, and I believe that having this new batch of books is a big part of that.

Thank you for investing in the lives of my students, both now and in the future, through your donation to expand my classroom library. You are helping these kids grow to love reading and become better readers. That will influence them for the rest of their lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Shaffer

My name is Waylon Shaffer. I've been an elementary school teacher for 8 years, teaching in a fifth grade classroom. Next year, I'm moving to fourth grade, and I'm taking this opportunity to build up my classroom library. I have some gaps in the nonfiction section, and I've put together a list of books to fill things in. I've chosen a wide variety of titles to round out my classroom library. There are chapter book and picture book biographies, as well as picture books and easier readers over science, history, and biographical subjects. My hope is to give struggling readers lots of options to help them find a "just right" book they can enjoy.
