For the first time in Chesapeake Science Point Public Charter School's recent high school history, we will be offering a music course - Music for Life. This course is an opportunity to hopefully begin to establish a small music program for students to turn their STEM education into a STEAM education.
Students have been desperately advocating for music - now we have the opportunity to provide this opportunity if the funding is made available!
Music for Life course will focus on exposing students to the cultural impact music has as well as basic music theory. Majority of the items for this project are rhythm base. Across cultures a common pattern is percussive instruments. Additionally, a wide variety of percussive instruments allow for drum circles, which has shown benefits for students to develop a sense of rhythm as well therapeutic benefits that help lower student stress and increase focus.
Finally, a digital, weighted keyboard from a reputable brand like Yamaha is necessary to provide musical examples to help teach theory skills. Being a digital keyboard also eliminates the need to consistently have a piano tune-up that a regular acoustic piano requires.
